History of the Essex Street Inn

The Essex Street Inn was originally built as the “Lucky Livery Stable” in the early 1800’s. Due to the Great Fire of 1811 it burned down along with leveling most of Downtown Newburyport. A new stable was soon built on the same spot.

In 1836 the property was purchased for $950 by an inn holder and two stable hands, reflecting a strong alliance with traveling guests, providing them with a place to stay and means of transportation.

In 1879 the property was purchased by the trustees of the estate of Dr. Henry C. Perkins. In 1880 the stable was razed and in its place the present Essex Street Inn was built in a conservative version of the style known as Victorian eclectic.

A three story duplex style (the main building) was first rented to a sail maker and the other half to the family of Joseph Titcomb Chase.

Eventually the two separate living spaces became one and turned into a fifteen room lodging facility. Later the townhouse suites along with two other houses; one of which was formally the Captain James Kettle house was added to the inn.

Through the years it had many different proprietors and was sold by the Pearson Family to the Guertin Family in the early 2000’s.

As of today all 3 buildings are on the same property to make up a 37 room facility. In 2007 a small conference center and exercise room was added.

Newburyport Civil War Walking Tour

Newburyport is rich in Civil War history, and that history comes alive with the Footsteps of Heroes: Civil War Walking Tours of Newburyport.

On Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Bill and Liz Hallett will lead participants back in time to the mid-19th century and the conflict that nearly tore the country apart. The tour will visit the location of the family dry goods store where Capt. Bartlett worked before becoming a casualty of the Battle of Antietam, the location of the old meetinghouse where Frederick Douglas spoke against slavery on his first New England tour and the home of a prominent citizen and presidential hopeful who was a dear friend of Jefferson Davis.

Participants will hear the accounts of famous ships, a Newburyport man who became a Confederate general, what Mayor Jackman and the city did upon hearing of the Lincoln Assassination and more.
The 90-minute tour will begin and end in front of Arthur Page Insurance Co. at 57 State St. In honor of Veterans Day, a $5 donation per person is requested for the Belleville Improvement Society, which maintains Newburyport's Civil War Memorial at Atkinson Common.

I just have to say we stayed at the floating cottage (an extension of the Essex St Inn) on Friday night and it was amazing!! We brought our own food to cook in the full kitchen, had some friends over and laughed all night. It was quiet, super clean, so different and so much fun! You wake up to the water right out your window, can see boats go by, watch the sunset...where else can you get this? It is your own private cabin on the water! I would HIGHLY suggest anyone to try this! Life is good!!

Each family will receive a votive candle that will be lit all at once at dusk - approximately 6:15 PM.

Joppa Flats Education Center offers lots of fun and family friendly events in October.

The Joppa Flats Education Center is located at the gateway to one of the country’s most productive, year-round, wildlife viewing areas—the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and the Plum Island estuary. Highlights for visitors are the many species of birds that utilize the area’s extensive salt marshes, mudflats, rivers, bays, and coastal waters. During local area field trips, Joppa Flats program participants have recorded over 300 species of birds including the bald eagle, snowy owl, many warblers, shorebirds, and waterfowl. View our current education program slideshow to get a sense of what we do at the Education Center. The visitor center overlooking the Merrimack River includes a children’s education room with marine touch tanks, a conference center, art exhibits, a nature shop, butterfly gardens, and interpretive displays.

This sanctuary has the following universally accessible facilities: Nature Center, Restrooms, Garden, and Banding Station at PRNWR.

Another year has come and gone. What does a new year bring? New memories; why not start off those memories with a trip to downtown Newburyport and stay with us! You can’t forget the infamous “resolutions,” why not make yours to travel? Traveling does not have to mean across the country or even abroad; it could mean just coming a couple towns over for a little getaway.
